Canada in English. Part one.

I was lost client for them.

Here is tiny story about my trip to far (at least for me) land named Canada.

Departure

The spring just started. Every one could see it. In fact it was early spring and it was much warmer than it had to be at that time. I was looking forward for chilly but warm enough weather. I had been told that the weather can be unpredictable in Calgary because of the mountains and all things like that. Mainly because of that and also because of “dye bene esse” I took winter clothes. thanks god I did it J. But in other places had to be warm weather and spring.

Last day at work, which lasts for ages, had gone, all farewells with friends and family finished and last bottle of wine had been dunked. I was at Moscow Sheremetevo airport, it was some hours before noon. Custom control. security control. about one hour of waiting near my gate. and I'm inside plane which is preparing for takeoff. Next plane was going to Paris. Maybe next time I'll use it.

Arriving

Ten hours of sitting in the same place in the plane. Russia, Scandinavia, Greenland, North Canada. Quebec and finally Ontario. I'm here. Toronto. there is snow around and not so warm but not too cold. Again it is custom, security. but another airport.

I stayed at my sisters friends. Nice people, nice home. The first stories how people live here, first instructions how to use transport and so so so. It was difficult day because I arrived in the middle of the day. but for me it was late night. So after several hours I fell asleep. and as you can guess woke up at four in the night))) not too good, but I made some beautiful photos.

Canadian and US waterfalls

Next day I've been driven to Niagara Falls. So, it is biggest waterfall. Weather became calmer than day before. hour after we arrived there I could walk just in t-short. I remembered it for next week.

So great amount of wild, water falling down dozens of meters. ice, snow, steam, frost, rainbow and sun. everything is mixed in one place at the same time. The other side of the river is USA.

See pic. [03,04,05,06]

It is difficult to say about this kind of things. I wish everyone I know to go there one day. You have to see it before die))).

When, some day you'll there – nice place to go after staring one hour into water is small street near the old steel bridge to USA. Funny buildings, casinos. and not so much wind like on the edge of the waterfall.

Also there is beautiful building of the old Niagara power station. I don't know if this station still play major role, but I'm sure it did. Also funny building is the Radisson hotel. When you look on it from the parking near waterfall it looks absolutely flat, like piece of paper or cardboard.

Toronto first part – night city

In the end of that long-long day I finally went to Toronto downtown.

Runnymede, Spidina, St.Geoge, Union stations. I used them a lot next days. They all are similar and have just a bit in architecture comparing to Moscow subway stations or to some others famous subways, but for me at that moment they didn't look so. That night began rain. Not strong, but cold and it always tried to get to my camera object glass.

See pic. [17,18]

I didn't pay attention to weather, at least for two hours. New city, different people. even the smell in the air was heady. Now I realized that there was smell. not just dust like in huge cities similar to that where I live in. Hope one day I'll live in cleaner one. But still compare to smaller towns it was not really so clear, but at that night rain played his role.

What I remember from that night – Old Irish man who explained me how to use underground ticket, canon near the maritime museum, lights of busy downtown when there is just a few people, glowing CN tower in the colored clouds … new sounds and smell.

When it became too cold because of rain I've returned back.

Toronto second part – on the top of the modern world

Next morning I went straight to the CN tower.

On the way there I was shocked by the light blue “river” near the train station. It was salt for the ice. One pack of such salt was on side walk and melting water made this river. Right time to say how much salt is Toronto government use. I was not satisfied about it because all my shoes and pants were with white lines.

If you don't know it – CN tower is the tallest building in the world. Also there is world's highest observation desk. It placed on the height of 447meters or 147 stores. This is maybe only place in Canada where I saw tourists. of cause there were some in Quebec city and on the pacific coast of Vancouver Island. but still. I met there two students. Guy was from Spain and the girl was Canadian. We spend together half an hour while we was admiring view. It was nice people.

See pic. [19,20,21,22,23]

If you have ever play Simsity computer game you saw very the same like if you on top of CN tower. Small boxes which is in fact big skyscrapers, toy highway and railway with tiny locomotives, cars which is no more than several pixels on photo with high resolution. I don't know why, but you didn't notice this while I was landing and takeoff on plane.

One thing that I was really admired – how tiny little child was sitting on the glass flour with the several hundred meters below while most of elder people was even afraid to look down through it. I was thinking – how many skills we lose and how many emotional barriers do we have inside. It is pity. We all have too many complexes.

Other thing to say about is really fast elevators in the CN tower-I wish have one of them at my home. It transfer you hundred meters higher faster than one in my multistoried building where I'm currently live lift me to the fourth floor.

I found one funny mug in the souvenir shop in the basement of CN tower – it has double side with some water between them. Also there was CN tower printed on this mug. I began to think of global warming. Maybe one day water level will be equal of the height of observation desk I've just described for you.

What to say more about this building? See photos. If you want I'll send you more. I have a lot of them. I was with my new tripod. with me. Photographers who are working there was not happy about it. I was lost client for them. After some time one of them said that it is good to come in the evening with my tripod. Maybe it was good idea but I had other ideas for evening.

What was in my plans is to walk around and then go all way to my temporary home. In fact 99% of tourist would think I'm crazy, because it is much closer to airport than to downtown. But for me their opinion is nothing. I just wanted to see ordinary live of citizens of Toronto, ordinal districts. And also I wanted to see Ontario lake. So I did it.

See pic. [24,25]

What I like about this city is mystic spirit which you can feel while going from one little store to another which I miss in my hometown when there are just supermarkets or grocery. I walked through all Queen st. west from downtown to Ontario. And I made the way with the same length home from the lake. I tired, but it cost it. Nigh beach where just a few people go at this time of the year and sidewalks are not cleaned and that's why there are a lot of ice on it. But I made nice photos))))

Only one thing I don't understand – why do the Toronto sidewalks in the park is not cleared in the winter. why not to clean at least major ones?

What else to say? I like that there is a lot of private galleries in Toronto and in Canada in general. It is really nice. I was inspired by them and decided to go to more big galleries next day.

Toronto third part – wet shoes and city's alma mater

One more small glass of Baileys, which I've bought on my way home in Toronto duty free later, and I continue.

Next morning I was walking around Toronto University, saw some exhibitions there. The building of university itself looks similar to old English universities. so. this has sense, because it is still British colony.

Previous day was a big snow fall. Canadians told that it was snow storm. I think it wasn't. at least for me. But this day all that snow started to melt. And because it is not well cleared from the streets my shoes soon became wet.

What marks made that day in my mind? Ok. Some paintings from painter who draw pictures of cities for the height of flying bird, university itself. and the girl Rachel who was making photos of stylish people on the street for web site. The funny thing was that she has the same camera like I did))) Thank you for that walking.

So my last day in Toronto on my way to Vancouver finished. I was a bit tired because of time zones change, because of completely wet shoes which I dried for two hours using hairdryer.

Ottawa.

Next day, early in the morning I went to railway station and went to Ottawa. Railway was station as overcrowded as Moscow subway in rush hour. With my suitcase I was nearly killed by the crowd but I survived. I exchanged all my reservation and spend one long hour waiting my departure.

One old woman was looking for train to Vancouver. French looking guy was laughing about it. But she was shy and was showing ticket. we found one railroad employee for her and she became happy and me too.

So it was sunny on the other side of the train window. Thanks for the nice conversation during the major part of the way to Rita, my seatmate on that train. I got knew something new about Canada and about the city I was going to. She makes clothes and was looking for show. I wish I were there. but my trip was different.

So that morning I left Russian speaking family where I was staying at and now I was looking for “Russian free” weeks or two.

One interesting thing about the city name “Ottawa” for me was that I made accent on first “a”, when it is right to make it on “O” otherwise most people just don't understand what you are speaking about.

So, after at the end of the day I near fell in love with this city despite of the fact that here was too much snow. and It was really difficult to carry my suitcase because wheels was not working and I was full of sweat when got to hostel. And there were reasons for this love.

First one is that this city is on the border of Ontario – English province and Quebec – French one. So it is half America, half Europe. French part is really looks like Europe and in is close for me.

Other reason was very welcome people.

After an hour walking around city it began getting dark and I walked to National gallery. If you ever come to this part of Canada you definitely have to visit it! Fortunately it was free that evening. First – after entering gallery I was given full detail recommendation where to go first in this gallery, what is more interesting, what is less and also some recommendations where to go else in this city. So I've just asked “what is the best place to start view this place”. But it was just the beginning.

See pics [29,30]

While I was leaving gallery I met nice girl. Again I was expecting to hear some recommendations. maybe several minutes of chat. But she made complete excursion of half Ottawa. She gave a lot of recommendations and told a lot about Ottawa. Thanks a lot for that. It is pity that we haven't met again next day. Maybe one day I'll be again there. who knows. and this pity thing will be corrected like mistake in schoolboy workbook.

Pity thing that the number of people I want to meet again and who is living far away increasing faster than I met them. Maybe more you travel more list is. but this people that, who you remember with smile.

Ottawa part two

Next day I went straight to parliament. Streets was full of snow and so.

See pics [26,27,28]

This parliament inside is the most beautiful building I saw in Canada. Manly in English style, looks like it is made by elves. Anyway I was really under impression after leaving this building till the end of the day. Also there is a perfect excursion which is also for free. I was thinking that, maybe, for government to be good only one thing which is needed is a good building? Maybe everything is so simple. I just can't imagine that in such building you could make dirty business.

Of course I'm not naivety and I understand that some people did such things. Politicians in all countries by nature the same more or less. There is something in people's nature about it. But I'm also a bit romantic )))

See pics [31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38 , 39]

So some part of the day I was walking around, I've clamed on the hill near the National gallery. all benches was mostly under snow. but first people who come here decided to live here standing on this hill.

Also big snowfall was about to start. I went to museum of civilization. Nice place to go with whole family. There is place for children to play in. Also there is amazing decorations of all stages of Canadian history from the view of lifestyle. I mean how buildings looked like, how people lived and what did they do.

[40,41,42,43,44,45]

While coming back I saw people with guitars coming into one building. It was a sight where to go. I left my backpack in hostel and went straight to this place. It was metal gig where played mostly young musicians. There I found some people. so I wasn't alone. Everyone was friendly. Thanks for evening to Emily, hope you'll be successful in music. One pity thing was that everything finished too early, because everyone was afraid of snow storm. I don't think it was really storm. but driving conditions really wasn't good.

So this is how Ottawa, the capital of Canada looked to me. Next day was the trip to Quebec.

Way to Quebec city. or “Canada finally showed me what is really snowstorm”

At the morning was sunny, there was a lot of snow (at least I thought at that moment, that it is a lot) . My trip was via Montreal. When I arrived to Montreal the weather get worth. I had three hour gap between the trains there and I had a plan to go around during this gap. But I managed to stay near railway station door and speak for several minutes with nice woman, who told me how to get to my hostel when I return back and to walk for ten minutes to made some quick photos and return to station and wait three my train to Quebec.

At that moment I even didn't imaging what was going to happen with me later that evening. I was lonely sitting in the train. All really budged seats were reserved before I made mine. That's why I had to choose a bit more expensive. But that's why there were no people I wanted to speak with at least near me. Mostly it was French speaking seniors.

I was going to arrive at 8pm, leave my baggage, walk around for a while, spent some time in caf% 26 # 233; or restaurant with looking to old Quebec city. but It didn't happen.

See pics [46,47,48,49]

Train arrived after 11pm. So, train was delayed for three hours, while whole trip has to lasts three hours from Montreal. Passengers were informed that they could stay inside because the weather conditions really bad. So they really were so. First time I went out of building I immediately returned back to. There was really strong wind. I think it was about 60-80 kilometers per hour. There was no transport or taxi because of the weather!

One thing I knew at that moment, that I don't want to stay at the station whole night. I had detailed maps, I had GPS which was useless as I found later because of the weather it didn't worked. So my trip had to be about one kilometer if I would chose right way. I had backpack, camera bag and heavy (about 20 kilo) bag.

All sidewalks were under snow, some road pointers and pieces of roof flew near me during the way. I made some mistakes in tracking my way. and made a hook and had to climb on long steel stairs, because my hotel has “good location” – it historic centre, right on the hillJ. But as I climbed on the hill it became much more difficult to go. Wind became stronger. First time in live I felt what mean “you can't go” Some streets was simply not passable because of the power of the wind. So finally I reached underground parking. It was about 2 / 3 way to hotel. I rested there several minutes and with kind help of French guy I went to the most close to my direction exit.

I really tired. And fortunately one car stopped. In fact there were just a few cars on the whole trip. The black man asked me if he could help me. Thanks him a lot. Who knows how difficult last two hundred meters could be taking in mind that fact that street where I was going to was open to river where wind was blowing from. So. after ten minutes we calculated how to get there by car and I was between out and inner door. And after five more minutes the door opened and I was welcomed on RussianJ. There was nice women and it was amazing hotel “chato de perri” I chose one of the cheapest I found in that area. I was wondered that women spoke in Russian. but the reason was my sister called earlier because I was late. At that moment I was as happy as never that I can enjoy perfect room with big warm bed and view to main building in Quebec city “chato de Frontenac” on through the window. In the morning I've realized that it was balcony, but the snow level was very high so I decided that it was window. I was smelling some Ontario wine which was with me. At that moment it seems that it is the best wine in the world. But the only one thing I took this bottle from the Toronto was that I didn't like it much and didn't want to drink earlier. So everything is relative.

See pics [50,51]

Next day I met some people from my train on the excursion and they told that they stayed at station till 5am. They were shocked that I get to hotel that night and they was full of envy because I was sleeping in bed that night. But they were with children. I wouldn't go in such weather if I were with children.

Quebec

Quebec was under snow. The level of snow was about the height of car. At the old street near the river, with most of souvenir shops were with the snow level was up to height of human, sometimes even higher. I walked with pleasure around all downtown, bought some beautiful colored glasses with unusual form. Unfortunately one of them has been broken by horrible airline – westjet on the way from Montreal to Calgary, but others are traveled OK to Moscow.

I had an amazing excursion in chato de Frontenac. It was not like usual excursion. It was like show with some magic and costumes. I won't describe all of that because I can't see power in my English to do it.

So. I had a lunch in lovely restaurant. I've tired of bad and junk food and wanted something better. The calm snow with big flakes began while I was going back to train station. I liked it very much. So train was replaced by bus. Everywhere in the world trains are more reliable than busses but not in Canada. But it was good, because I had a long conversation with man from Belgium who worked there.

See pics [52 - 68]

I've returned to Montreal even earlier than I had to be.

Montreal

It was Montreal. It was not like I saw it the day before. There weather was pretty nice. I went to my hostel. The first thing that made me wonder is that wheels on the subway trains, like on automobile, made of rubber. Other thing is that I wasn't understood when I asked the way to subway. They told me that we are already in subway (the railway station is placed under ground floor). When I told that I'm looking for “Metro” they pointed me the direction. Ok. Underground in UK, Subway in America, and. one more word for the same in Montreal – “Metro”. There are too many words for the same in English. In Russian we have “Metro” and it is enough, why do people made too many words with the same meaning?

See pic [69]

The hostel was very lovely. It was much better than that one in Ottawa where I stayed two days before. There was nice atmosphere and a lot of interesting people. The name is Alexandre-Montreal. I recommend it to everyone. So, I've been told some interesting stories, like one about fact that you can't find punks and people like them on the west part of the city. I haven't told before, but all American cities is not like in Europe. All streets have direction from north to south and from west to east. Other directions are rare. The only reason for them is nature landscape like rivers. So there is a main street which split this city to two parts. West one is British, east is French. French police is much loyal. Also there is a lot of gay clubs in the French part and so so so.

One thing that I was happy about is that you can buy beer not just in specialized stories in Quebec province . In all others places you can do it only in specialized liquor stories.

Next day morning most of museums were closed. so I went to Notre dame de Montreal. While I was going there I went through historic centre. I was wondered why there are pointers to hotel “hotel de villa” near the pointers to historic buildings and monuments. Answer which I receive later is that “hotel de villa” mean “city hall”. I felt stupid.

Notre dame is really amazing. So it was predictable. After that I met girl Maria. At first I thought that she is also tourist like me, because she made photos. But it was not true. She just was walking around and has couple hours free time. So, thank you for your excursion, for interesting things you've told, for walk to hill with observation desk, where I was able to see all Montreal like on palm. I think it was most interesting time in Montreal. If one day I'll be again in Montreal I'll try to meet you.

See pics [70 - 79]

So , that day was very very long. I walked around streets of Montreal till dark and then with pizza and beer came to hostel. By the way it was cold days. Temperature was about -10 C and I was getting tired of this weather. After some time in the kitchen and hall, after some conversations with people who with I was not found much in common one French man asked about sharing his bottle of whisky. He didn't new even the one word in English. I don't know anything in French. But somehow I understood that he is song writer, he put CD with his lyric in the stereo system. In fact it was pretty nice music. Unfortunately I was too lazy to come to my room and grab laptop to copy it. After short time some others people joined us. One of them was English girl Emily who I was speaking with earlier that morning, but in the evening there was no hurry. Also there was a woman from Australia. She has complex story about why she stayed in hostel. That story about broken love, contract which was not allow her come back when she wanted and so. She spoke half story in English then continued in French. Emily was so kind to translate me from French some conversations with French man and that woman. Later the company became bigger. While telling story of his live, drugs, music, family and so French man brought bottle of good French wine and a bit later fall asleep. So it was nice evening. Thanks everyone, especially Emily.

Last hours in Montreal

What to say about last day on the east coast of Canada on the way to Vancouver? I spend it to see Bio-doom – place in the Montreal Olympic stadium where stadium had been rebuilt to contain four ecological systems. Very interesting. five steps from tropics to ecological system I used to.

Also I was walking around great monument from the past. This Olympic Games was long before I was born. But the flags are still in place despite of the fact that some of them changed colors. and Olympic fire is not burning. Everything seems not changed outside and inside main building. The old signs on the entrance, wide passes to stadium look very lonely without people. It has some mystic.

Like in Toronto I walked around ordinary district, entered some ordinary cathedrals. in fact they look not much worth than Notre dame. It is unfair – why people go just to one well known place while there is so many interesting and beautiful around.

Several hours later I was on plane. My plane was taking off and I was admiring perfect view of night city. I never saw it in this time of the day so close to living districts. All the way to Calgary there were circles in the clouds from lights of the cities below. Some of them was bigger, some smaller. The closer I was to Calgary the more often I saw lights on the ground from streetlights and houses, roads and buildings without clouds between us. I realized that it has to be warm there. And it was true. I arrived in Calgary where no snow and was warm.

See pict [80,81,82]

. But I'll continue about it later. I'm sure – you've tired from reading it.
